The world of skincare for men can often seem like a bit of a minefield. Pretty much everyone wants to look their best, right? But with so many different products floating around, putting together a skincare routine can be a mind-boggling task. And let’s be honest, it’s probably not on the top of your to-do list at the moment.
But it doesn’t need to be complicated! Remember, we don’t do fuss here at grüum. Looking after your skin is surprisingly easy once you get going. After all, your face is there for the long haul, so it’s probably worth taking care of it.
We’ve put together this handy guide to get you going with the basics and kick-start your skincare routine:
But my face feels fine, why should I bother with a skincare routine?
Because prevention is better than cure, amigo. A simple routine can fend off a whole bunch of skin related issues that you’d rather not have to deal with yourself. Put it this way, you’re far less likely to wake up one morning with a surprise eruption of puss-filled guests on your face when you’ve got a skincare routine in place.
Taking a few minutes out of your day to give your face some TLC can also help to slow down the ticking clock of ageing. It keeps the skin looking fresh and prevents the emergence of wrinkles.
Convinced yet? Well, we’ve put together this handy guide to get you going with the basics so you can kick-start your skincare routine:
Tip: For best results, we’d recommend doing this every morning and evening.
Step 1: Cleanse

Clean skin is the bedrock of any skincare routine. Start by giving your face a gentle scrub with a gentle cleansing wash to remove any grease and grime. We’re all for a bit of time-saving, so if you’re taking a shower, go ahead and kill two birds with one stone and cleanse your face in there.
Although it can be tempting to grab your shower gel/soap and use it on your face, please don’t! Your facial skin is so much more delicate than the rest of your body, so you need to take a bit of extra care to keep it happy. Each time you wash your face with regular soap or shower gel, you damage the protective barrier that keeps moisture, nutrients, and other good stuff inside. This can lead to dry, irritated and dull-looking skin, with more problems in the long-term.
Male skin is about 25% thicker and produces more oil than its female counterpart, so an exfoliating cleanser is ideal for reducing that nasty build up. kóri exfoliating face wash is packed full of skin-friendly natural ingredients and is suitable for all skin types.
Step 2: Tone

Facial toner. Perhaps you’ve heard of it? Or perhaps (as a lot of people will be) you’re sitting there thinking “what on earth is that?”.
Yes, we know, it all sounds a bit fancy and unnecessary, but adding a toner to your skincare routine literally takes seconds, you’d be surprised how much of a difference it can make to your skin.
Male skin has a tendency to be quite oily, which can lead to shine and blemishes. Giving your face a quick mist of toner after cleansing helps to keep these oils at bay, whilst removing any excess dirt that may be hanging around on the skin.
The antibacterial properties mean that toner is great for use after shaving, repairing the skin and keeping bacteria at bay.
gösta facial tonic (our toner) comes in a handy spray bottle, so you can literally just spray it on, then either leave it to dry naturally or if you have any knocking about, give it a wipe with a cotton pad.
Although you should use a toner all year round, its a real godsend in the summer. Not only does it help to relieve you of unwanted shine, soothing ingredients like Aloe Vera and Witch Hazel means it’s also super soothing on sun-ravaged skin.
Step 3: Moisturise

The final step in your skincare routine is to lock in all that goodness with a moisturiser. This is extra important if you’re a regular shaver as it’s easy for the skin to become dry and irritated.
A lightweight moisturiser (like kåre) usually works best on male skin, as not to be too greasy.
Work a pea-sized amount of product all over your face, avoiding any facial hair. If you’re prone to extra oiliness then you might want to avoid your forehead. If you’re a little more on the dry side then feel free to use a little extra product where it’s needed.
Dry skin is often a problem when the weather is chilly, so make sure you’re on top form with your moisturiser in the winter time.
We’d recommend applying a thin layer in the morning, to keep you hydrated and protected from the elements throughout the day. Then, before you go to bed, apply a thicker layer to allow the product to really work its magic overnight. You’ll wake up the next morning with skin that looks bright and refreshed.
The last word
It might seem like a big change at first, especially if you’re totally new to the whole “skincare thing”, but give it a try, we reckon you’ll be surprised by how easy it is.
We’re not trying to say that you’re all of a sudden going to emerge from the bathroom resembling a Hollywood star, but the chances are you’ll be pretty chuffed with the results if you stick with it for a while – Rome wasn’t built in a day, you know?
There are so many benefits to looking after your skin; from banishing blemishes, combating redness and irritation, to simply keeping your look that little bit fresher – it’s the small changes that can make a big difference, so why not give it a go?
